What to Do When You're In a Guitar Practice Slump

By Steven

Every guitarist—whether you're just starting out or have been playing for years—hits a slump now and then. Maybe your motivation dips, your progress feels flat, or life just gets in the way. If that’s you right now, first of all: you're not alone. Second—don’t put the guitar down just yet.

Here are a few ways to work through the slump and fall back in love with playing:

1. Change the Routine
Practicing the same scales or songs over and over can get dull. Try switching things up. Learn a song in a totally different genre, experiment with alternate tunings, or just play by ear for a while. Sometimes, a small shake-up is all it takes.

2. Set a Mini-Goal
Instead of aiming to “get better,” set a specific, fun challenge:
🎯 Learn the intro to your favorite song this week
🎯 Master one new chord shape today
🎯 Record a short video of yourself playing something new

Small wins build momentum.

3. Go Back to What Made You Pick Up the Guitar
Pull out that first song you learned. Watch the artist that inspired you. Remind yourself why you started in the first place. That spark is still in you.

4. Take a Guilt-Free Break
Yep, I said it. Sometimes rest is more productive than pushing through. Give yourself a day or two off—completely guilt-free. You might be surprised how much more excited you are to play once you’ve had space.

5. Jam Without a Purpose
Turn off the metronome. Don’t worry about hitting every note. Just pick up your guitar and play. Make noise. Let it be messy. Let it be fun.

6. Surround Yourself With Music
Even when you’re not actively playing, stay connected. Watch live performances, check out a new guitar podcast, or visit your favorite local open mic night. Immersing yourself in music keeps your passion alive—even on the off days.

Remember: Slumps Are Normal
Some days you’ll fly through practice. Some days, just holding the pick feels like a win. Progress isn’t linear—and that’s okay. The important thing is to keep showing up, in whatever way you can.

If you need help, inspiration, or even just someone to talk shop with, I’m here. Feel free to check out my lessons or reach out. Sometimes, the best way out of a slump is to play through it—together.
